Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A: Hospital Insurance

Medicare Part A helps cover the costs of medically necessary care that involves an inpatient hospital stay. It also helps pay for a stay in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care for the terminally ill, and some skilled homecare for the homebound.
Services covered include:
  • A semi-private room
  • Hospital meals
  • Skilled nursing services
  • Care on special units such as intensive care
  • Drugs, medical supplies, and medical equipment as an inpatient
  • Lab tests, X-rays, and radiation as an inpatient
  • Operating and recovery room services
  • Some blood transfusions in hospital or at a skilled nursing facility
  • Rehabilitation services such as physical therapy received via home health care
  • In-home skilled health care if you're home bound or only need part-time care
  • Hospice care (symptoms management and pain control)
Services not covered:
  • Most doctors services, which are covered under Medicare Part B and require a deductible and 20% co-insurance
  • Personal costs in the hospital such as television or telephone charges
  • Custodial care, or care that helps you with daily activities
Coverage limits
If you are hospitalized for more than 90 days at a time, there are limits on the number of days Medicare Part A will pay for. There are also limits on the number of days of care in a nursing facility Part A will pay for. Part A does pay for an unlimited number of skilled home healthcare visits or hospice care visits, however, you must meet certain conditions to receive either type of assistance.
